Mary Ann Schmeits, resident of rural Ericson, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on January 29, 1942, in Loup City, Nebraska, she was the beloved daughter of Martin and Dolly (Johansen) Markvicka.

Mary Ann devoted her life to both family and the land she loved. On October 31, 1975, she united in marriage with Gene T. Schmeits, and together they committed over five decades to life on the Schmeits’ homestead in Ericson. Over the years, Mary Ann and Gene worked side by side, farming and ranching.

Mary Ann's presence will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 50 years, Gene Schmeits of rural Ericson. She is also survived by a sister, Beverly Hetfield of Cario; a sister-in-law, Linda Markvika of North Loup; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who were fortunate to know her warmth and kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Dolly Markvicka; an infant sister, Nelly; sisters, Norma and Janet; and brothers, Martin “Hank” and Jim.

In accordance with her family’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal services are planned at this time.
